I did manage to see Old Faithful during the daytime. There were hardly any people there at night, so it was funny to see just how many people were there during the day.

the last couple of days were much better in yellowstone – so much better that it seemed like everything was a vivid blue. the sky was clear, the animals were out, the dogs were barking – wait – shhhhhhh – no bark!

We stayed at the Indian Creek Campground. These are from one of the creeks that flow into Gardner River.

the reason i am on this trip

so the main reason i have gone on this journey is because in may 1999 i tried to go through yellowstone on my way to seattle. i was on my way to do an internship with microsoft. two of my cousins – keisha and jonetta, pictured below, drove across the country with me. we were stopped because of snow on the road in MAY! the beartooth highway that leads from cody (after chief joseph’s highway ends) to cooke city and the entrance to yellowstone was still closed! DENIED!

before we got to the snow on the road, i took this photo:

well i liked it so much that i wanted to come back and see this area again and take more photographs in the area. i really liked this photo so i thought there ought to be some more great scenery to take pictures of. i didn’t know exactly where we were or what the name of the cliffs were. i searched in google earth using the 3d view and the fact that there was a lake in front. cathedral cliffs was one of the several places that i identified might be where we were.

i found it! cathedral cliffs was the name of the cliffs, and i was able to line up almost exactly where i stood to take the picture. that was pretty fun to do!

my second day in yellowstone was not as spectacular as the first day.

first there was rush hour.

then the sky would not give me any sun, so my panoramic photos aren’t quite what i had imagined. i still like them, but if i had gotten any sun into those pools, they would have better. we’ll see if its better light on my way back through.

then several panoramic photos that I shot didn’t come out. motion blurred, out of focus, and under-exposed. yes sometimes photographers just have an off day. check this out – even yellowstone lake looked dreary.

and the forest was all burnt up!!!

the one good thing about that day was that dusty must have been feeling my vibe, and wanted to be close to me so he jumped up front into the co-pilot’s seat! isn’t he so cute!

First Look at Yellowstone

There was no room in any campgrounds in Yellowstone for the first two nights I planned on being there, because they were all booked up except for the first-come-first-serve campgrounds, which were all too far away from where I wanted to be. I drove in from West Yellowstone, down along several rivers to end up at Old Faithful. Along the way I saw some cool waterfalls, swimming holes, elk, and hot springs.
